Talbot Mundy was an English writer during the early 20th century who wrote historical and sci-fi novels that proved very influential on subsequent generations, including writers like Robert E. Howard and Leigh Brackett. Like his most famous work King of the Khyber Rifles, Mundy used British occupied India as a backdrop for many of his stories, giving the setting a heavy dose of intrigue, romance, and mystery.

Winds of the World Talbot Mundy 9781507697344 Books Reviews
Talbot Mundy has the knack of writing series of books, which, to our joy, we don't have to read in any particular order! You lose nothing by reading this book AFTER "When India Came to Fight in Flanders," which is this book's sequel. The stories have an internal order...and it doesn't matter a bit.
Mundy is a "Low-Cal Americanized Kipling." He comes very close to Kipling's level of mastery, but tends to soft-pedal the action. Where Kipling fires a volley of cannon, Mundy has conspirators explaining why the cannon should not be fired. His action depends more on dialogue. Less "Mike Hammer" than "Dashiell Hammett." Intrigue is his strong point -- but don't imagine it's all just words. There is action; it's just subdued.
This is a novel of political intrigue in India in the opening days of WWI. The focus is on Yasmini, a schemer and a scoundrel, a manipulator, a seducer. You will not like her...but you will love her.
I have never read a Talbot Mundy book I didn't totally enjoy. These pulp adventures are great entertainment.
I have read the second bit of Ranjoor Singh's fight in Flanders, it's called "Hira Singh". He's a true depiction of a khalsa (sikhs are called Khalsa). Wonderful read both this and the following sequel.
